We believe that apprenticeships play a pivotal role in the sustained development and growth of County Durham and every year we strive to offer a range of opportunities. We believe that apprenticeships are hugely beneficial for us as an employer, but also recognise their value to the individual.
Apprenticeships are for all ages. They provide an excellent pathway for anyone wanting to begin or progress their career.
As an apprentice you will learn from skilled professionals whilst being supported to study towards a recognised qualification (such as an NVQ, HNC, HND or a degree) with a college/university/training provider. Apprenticeships can take between one and six years to complete, depending on the level.
We offer apprenticeships across a variety of areas, including Civil Engineering, Business Administration, Surveying, Procurement, Housing, Leisure, Human Resources, Joinery, Electrician, Plastering, Financial Management and more.
Meet some of our apprentices and find out why they think our apprenticeship programme is great too!
Benefits for the apprentice:
• Real-time hands-on work experience
• Earn whilst you learn
• Structured training to help you achieve a recognised qualification
• Opportunities to progress to higher qualifications such as HNCs and HNDs
Benefits for Durham County Council:
• Attract top talent from across the region
• Fresh perspectives and new ideas
• Boost workforce skills
• Future proof the workforce
Our campaign to recruit apprentices usually starts in May/June each year, this gives us time to get everything in place with our local colleges and education providers ready for the commencement of the academic year in September.
Durham County Council works alongside the National Apprenticeship Service which makes it easier for firms to attract and recruit apprentices in England through its free online recruitment system. The system is the first stop for anyone looking for apprenticeships and allows vacancies to be viewed and applied for nationally, for more information on apprenticeships go to
