Local Area Coordinator – Biddick and All Saints Area
(Integrated Commissioning, South Tyneside)
£39,186 pa

Are you passionate about supporting people to achieve flourishing lives as connected citizens of their own communities?

Then this might be the role for you!

Do you love working alongside people and families helping them achieve their vision of a better life and sharing their gifts and skills? Are you passionate about nurturing the power of local people and places?
We are a forward-thinking Council that is developing innovative approaches to meet our challenges. We want South Tyneside to be a place where people live healthy, happy, and fulfilled lives and are part of strong communities. Working closely with all our partners our vision for the future is to see every person in South Tyneside able to fully utilise their strengths and assets, to remain safe and well in the neighbourhoods and communities they call home.
We understand promoting the importance of social justice and inclusion, respecting people’s rights, citizenship and participation.

With the help of the national Local Area Coordination Network, South Tyneside Council are establishing a new Local Area Coordination team, alongside our Alliance partners to support both our practical and strategic aims in these areas.

About the Role:

The Local Area Coordinator will act as an accessible point of contact for people and families in a local area.  Any local person will be able to connect with them with no lengthy assessment needed and no time limit to the relationship.  The Local Area Coordinator’s job will be to connect with and “walk alongside” people and families helping them find sustainable (often non-service based) solutions to any concerns / challenges, whilst also promoting inclusive connected communities too.  The majority of the Local Area Coordinators role will be spent alongside people and families experiencing some form of exclusion and complex challenges, helping citizens to envision and coordinate their plans for a better life.

This varied and dynamic role includes:
  • Helping people access personalised information and short-term support in their local area.
  • Developing longer-term relationships with people/families facing more complex life situations. Local Area Coordinators dedicate time to helping people recognise their strengths, explore options, make choices, plan for the future, and access sustainable solutions.
  • Cultivating strong partnerships with community members, groups, agencies, and services to support local community ‘capacity building’ and closer collaboration.
  • Collecting stories and information to drive transformative changes in the wider health and social care system, showcasing how the Local Area Coordination approach and principles can reduce need for statutory, funded supports, and commissioned services.

About you:

You will have outstanding listening, communication and interpersonal skills for building trusting relationships. You must be committed to not ‘do to’ or ‘fix’ people and instead help people experiencing complex issues to identify and pursue their own goals and plans acting as a supportive partner alongside them as agreed with the person / family.

You will be experienced in supporting people and families from diverse backgrounds with person-centred and holistic approaches (for instance Health Literacy and Co-production) to build a picture of the life they want for themselves and supporting people to create plans towards achieving their vision.

We remain fully committed to supporting our staff to grow and develop, and we will provide you with the opportunity to use your skills and learn new ones.

Please read the document ‘Additional Information’ for details about candidates’ information sessions; the recruitment process and guidance on completion of your Supporting Statement which should be limited to 1,000 words.

We offer an excellent benefits package and further information is available here - www.southtyneside.gov.uk/workinghere
