Further Information
An opportunity has arisen for a Regional Tobacco Officer, supporting and enhancing the work of the 12 Local Authority Trading Standards Services making up the North East Trading Standards Association (NETSA). This is a pivotal role in combatting the supply of illegal tobacco across the North East, and supports the Government strategy, “Stubbing out the problem”, published in January 2024 to target demand for and the supply of illicit tobacco across the United Kingdom.

Continuing the work of Operation CeCe aimed at tackling the illegal supply of tobacco (a National Trading Standards project supported though HMRC), the successful applicant will work closely with, and facilitate joint working across, enforcement agencies and partners throughout the North East. This will be achieved by providing additional enforcement capacity and managing and undertaking regional enforcement and disruption activity in the NETSA region.

The post holder will contribute to strategies and plans tackling the supply of illegal tobacco in the region whilst reporting, with other regional Tobacco Officers, to the Lead Tobacco Manager at National Trading Standards (NTS).

The role involves direct enforcement, project management and the direction of resources to deliver positive outcomes in the Region aimed at reducing and disrupting the supply of illegal tobacco.

Employed by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, alongside officers from the Regional Investigation and Intelligence Teams, the post holder will report to the Regional Enforcement Manager, work closely alongside the Trading Standards Regional Co-ordinator and provide information to the NETSA Executive Management Board.

Due to the nature of the role, the post holder is required to travel around the region and attend National meetings held by NTS.

Previous experience of enforcing legislation is required and knowledge of the regulatory role of Trading Standards would be advantageous.
