Further Information

Northumberland County Council is looking to appoint a substantive, full time, flexible and adaptable Consultant in Public Health to join its forward-thinking team. If successful, the applicant will have the opportunity to lead on a variety of areas which could include health protection, policy and place, children and young people and mental health and a variety of community-based health improvement programmes. Responsibilities will also include playing a central role in reducing inequalities and leading our data and business intelligence team.

Northumberland is the most beautiful county in which to live and work but despite its numerous attractions, as England's most sparsely populated and northern county, we have some specific public health challenges. These include a disproportionately ageing population and the often-forgotten socioeconomic impact of rurality along with an urban southeast corner which continues to face the difficulties consistent with the legacy of former coalfield areas. The Council has a reputation for innovation, and we have a longstanding culture of close joint working and integration with our NHS colleagues and the voluntary and community sector.

With this in mind, we are looking for a consultant with excellent leadership and strong technical skills who can develop and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders across the public and VCSE sectors and with communities. The successful applicant should be committed to using community centred approaches to improve health and wellbeing. The post-holder must be on the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists/GMC/GDC Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applicants from all backgrounds and want our workforce to reflect the diversity of our local communities so that we can all work for a brighter future - together.

For an informal discussion please email sandra.blackwood@northumberland.gov.uk who will arrange a time for a phone call with Gill O'Neill. Executive Director of Public Health.

Times of work: 9 am - 5 pm (some evening work) Weekly working hours: 37 hours

Closing Date: Friday 2 February 2024

Interview Date: Friday 1 March 2024
