Sunderland is a fantastic, forward-looking city undergoing significant transformation and economic regeneration. It has a global reputation as a welcoming and inclusive place in which to live, work, invest and play.

As a result of the ambitions for the City we have an exciting opportunity for a permanent, full-time Principal Building Control Officer within the Building Control and Development Management Group.

Building Control is an integral part of the City’s development management service covering a wide range of work across the city including complex commercial developments, multi-faceted city centre schemes and a variety of residential applications. Current development proposals include the delivery of the Riverside Sunderland masterplan, the South Sunderland Growth Area, the International Advanced Manufacturing Park and the recently announced Electric Vehicle Hub, EV36Zero.

At Sunderland career development is something we take seriously and we love seeing our colleagues grow with us, with many members of the team progressing quickly as they gain more experience and responsibilities within their specialist areas. We are committed to building an exceptional Team that will meet the anticipated regulatory requirements of the Building Safety Act. With a strong and supportive management team behind you, you'll play a key part in helping us achieve the objectives of the City Plan and drive forward our vision to create a connected, international city with opportunities for all.

Helping to deliver a healthy, safe and successful built environment, you will have good experience/knowledge in applying the Building Regulations, interpreting plans/construction specifications, plan assessment, dangerous structures/associated legislation and dealing with all aspects of building work that typically gets submitted into a lively City based building control team.

We need an enthusiastic person who can balance a full workload, work independently on a range of Building Regulation submissions and provide competent support for the whole team.

The post provides more senior level professional input into the scrutiny/assessment of more complex applications. Within this context, the post holder will be responsible for complex schemes and will be responsible for the negotiation of fees and for securing work on major development projects, involving significant investment in the City and support from the Management Team.

The post holder will also be required to support the management of the team, taking responsibility for a defined area of work within the city. All officers are expected to support the continuous improvement and development of the team on the services that are provided. The post holder will be responsible for supervising mentoring and allocating work to a small team of surveyors and take responsibility for some of the more complex developments within the city.
