Further Information

These are exciting times at the Port of Sunderland! It’s a time of expansion in Port business and an opportunity has arisen for a Port Engineer to join the team.

Over the last decade, the Port of Sunderland has established a position in the marketplace for the provision of port services and infrastructure to a growing customer base and in a variety of market segments. These include dry & liquid bulk material; steel; forest products; construction; project cargo and the offshore renewable sectors.

Annual cargo volume for 2022 totalled 720,000 tonnes and the Port estate has been chosen by several investors as the location for bespoke third-party materials handling facilities for commodity, circular economy and multimodal development activity.

The Port’s two Enterprise Zone sites (20 acres) will allow further opportunities for such developments further enhancing port revenues over the long-term. Right now, we are looking for a Port Engineer to join our customer focused team. With your can-do approach to business, you will assist in minimising downtime of plant and equipment to allow the Port to maximise operational productivity.

Within the role you will be responsible for carrying out effective maintenance and repair work on equipment, including harbour mobile cranes, forklift trucks and heavy plant, brought into the engineering workshop and out on the Port estate.

Your daily duties will involve carrying out mechanical and electrical repairs to ensure compliance in accordance with all current relevant codes of practice and legislation. You will have the opportunity to build strong working relationships with internal departments and third-party suppliers, and you will make decisions independently on a daily basis, in relation to safety and operational needs appropriate to the identified risk.

As part of Sunderland City Council, your employee benefits package will include an initial holiday allowance of 26 days plus bank holidays rising with length of service up to 31. You will be eligible to enrol into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and you will have access to discounted travel, car lease schemes and a host of other discounts and employee benefits.

You will also have access to the wellbeing and benefits portal Vivup which also offers a range of discounts and wellbeing support. We have free car parking available at the port too!

If you have experience in HGV, plant, and forklift truck repair (and maintenance) we would like to hear from you.
