About the Team
The International Economic Partnerships (IEP) Team leads on the bilateral economic relationships with priority international partners. We promote and protect HM Treasury's interests internationally working to support UK domestic prosperity and ensure UK influence on the global economic landscape. The team is split into the Americas and Emerging Markets Unit and the Europe and Asia-Pacific Unit. This role sits within the first of these units.
About the Job
The role is responsible for developing HM Treasury’s strategy for the US economic relationship and delivering on that including through set-piece ministerial and senior official engagements. You will work closely with teams around HM Treasury, the British Embassy in Washington, the US Embassy in London, and others. Now is a particularly fascinating time to work on our US relationship in the context of the forthcoming US Presidential and Congressional elections in November. The role also supports on the Canada and Mexico bilateral relationships.
Key Accountabilities include:
- Shape and own HM Treasury’s engagement and policy strategy for the United States, working across HM Treasury teams and other government departments to create and ensure wider buy-in to a collective economic strategy. Advise seniors and ministers on this strategy; and ensure it actively accounts for and delivers on HM Government strategic objectives.
- Feed into senior level thinking on wider international strategy. Deliver on PM and Chancellor priorities, advising ministers on policy and objectives, and driving forward overall strategic aims through delivering high quality on the ground Chancellor trips, events and engagement.
- External representation of HM Treasury to international partners, identifying strategic priorities for the UK economy, providing high quality advice to senior ministers, and delivering positive policy outcomes through the UK/US relationship.
- Management of regular economic and political reporting to inform domestic policy making and create strategic join up, and ensuring the branch is the centre of US expertise in order to inform UK policy.
There may be opportunities for international travel.
About You
The post holder will need to have a good grasp of economics (but doesn’t need to be an economist) as the US’ centrality in the global economic and financial system is key to the role’s context. You need to be able to juggle multiple projects simultaneously, work to tight deadlines with a range of stakeholders, see how your work connects to the Treasury’s wider domestic and international objectives, and be able to represent the UK with externals.
