We are looking for an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join a growing team in Sunderland, with experience of working in health and safety enforcement, and should ideally have experience of undertaking health and safety inspections, with a good knowledge of health and safety law.

This fixed term temporary position will support the existing Environmental Health and Licensing Teams in meeting the increasing demands of COVID-19 related enquiries to the Council. Main duties will include reactive investigations and subsequent review of COVID-19 secure premises risk assessments within commercial premises across the City, providing suitable advice to businesses regarding all COVID-19 related matters. The successful candidate will undertake the investigation of potential breaches of legislation by gathering evidence, undertaking formal interviews including service of statutory notices, preparing case files and statements and attending court when necessary, using a graduated and proportionate approach to enforcement.

The ideal candidate should be able to undertake reactive investigations of complex COVID-19 outbreaks with minimal supervision. In doing so, they will ensure businesses adhere to relevant social distancing requirements and adopt appropriate hygiene measures across the City using a range of skills including but not limited to; good verbal communication; persuasion; the provision of advice and guidance or; enforcement where necessary to secure compliance with all relevant legislation or guidance.
