Further Information
  • Are you starting out as a Civil Engineer, looking for your first step towards a long-lasting and fulfilling career?
  • Would you like to join a forward-thinking and innovative organisation that will provide excellent support and invest in your development?
  • Do you want to work in a role that allows you to stay local to Stockton-on-Tees and work from home for part of your week?

Look no further! We are delighted to be recruiting for a Civil Engineer Technician to join our experienced and friendly team.

In this role, you will assist with the delivery of significant capital projects across Stockton-on-Tees, from routine improvements to large-scale major highway works. Some of our recent projects include the Bishopsgarth Bridge installations, Elton Interchange, Thornaby Towns Fund cycleways and Durham Lane cycleway.

Civil Engineering at the Council is uniquely rewarding, offering a hands-on approach that allows you to work on a project from initial design and planning through to the construction and completion stages. As a Civil Engineering Technician, your job will be helping plan and construct roads, bridges, and buildings. You’ll learn how to design, build, and maintain these structures whilst ensuring they are built correctly and safely.

It’s an exciting time to join us as you will be involved in the large-scale programme of investment, which is underway to transform the look and feel of our town centres. You’ll have the satisfaction of seeing the results of your hard work and the pride in knowing: ‘I helped build that’, as well as directly shaping a sustainable built environment for the local communities and future generations of the Borough.

Alongside a great salary, you will develop your knowledge through a combination of formal training and on-the-job learning to gain invaluable experience and skills that pave the way for exciting opportunities and career progression. This is more than just a job—it's a pathway to a promising future.

You will receive the support you need to thrive and career development opportunities – in fact many of our senior team started their career at Stockton and have loved it so much they have stayed!

Don’t just take our word for it! Here’s what our team think…

‘Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is a great environment for me to learn multiple disciplines of civil engineering, and I am able to work on various schemes within highways, structures, and flooding.

Due to flexible working I can create a schedule that suits my needs, whether that be working from home, in the office or on site.’

We are keen to hear from individuals with the following:
  • A relevant qualification (HNC or equivalent)
  • Experience of Auto CAD at an intermediate level and producing technical drawings for civil engineering projects
  • Experience with completing technical highway design tasks to a high standard and set deadlines

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council prides itself on being a great place to work where staff are trusted, valued and supported to make a positive contribution at work. Within this role, travel is limited to within the Stockton-on-Tees borough, and we offer flexibility around working arrangements, including homeworking to support your work-life balance.

When not on-site or homeworking, you will be working in our brand-new modern office in central Stockton, with excellent facilities and spaces for both collaborative and individual working.

We offer an excellent total reward package, including:
  • A competitive salary of up to £31,364.00 in line with your qualifications and experience
  • 27 days annual leave per year rising to 32 with 5 years service (plus bank holidays). Ability to purchase additional leave is also available.
  • Generous Pension Scheme through the LGPS with ability to pay extra and plan for retirement.
  • Access to a number of other employee benefits including learning & development opportunities, a car lease scheme, discounts at high street and online retailers, an employee assistance programme and physiotherapy services.
