As part of the Council’s Annual Apprenticeship Program, we have an amazing opportunity to gain work experience as an Apprentice Highways Development Technician, whilst studying towards a Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 apprenticeship qualification. We are looking for someone who wants to make a difference, to serve the people of our borough, and who is committed to their own development.

Working alongside our team of Civil Engineers you will assist the Council, as the local Highway Authority, with the planning, design & development of our highways infrastructure to industry standards. Assisting in advising developers on new highways from initial concept through to construction and operation and on improvements to existing highway works, you will learn to use computer software (such as AutoCAD) and modelling applications while working on a variety of projects. As a member of the Highways, Transport and Design team, you will also gain wider experience of civil engineering supporting other teams with larger projects to safeguard and improve our built environment. With an increasing drive for sustainability, you will also consider the impact of our work on the environment.

As this is an apprenticeship opportunity, you will be provided with all the training and support you need to be a success. We are looking for someone with the following qualifications, personal attributes, skills and behaviours:
• 5 x GCSE (or equivalent L2 or above qualifications) which must include English Language, Maths and a Science at Grade C / 4 or above
• Communication skills - listening, spoken and written
• ICT Skills - Microsoft Office (Word & Excel) – Training on bespoke software will be provided
• Team player who is not afraid to try something new
• Commitment to own personal and professional development

Please outline in your personal statement in your online application how you meet this criteria.

ABOUT OUR OFFER: We offer a competitive apprenticeship salary, paid time to attend training, generous annual leave, local government pension and access to a number of other benefits like discounts at high street and online retailers, and health & wellbeing support including access to mental wellbeing support and physiotherapy services. We are committed to supporting you throughout your apprenticeship with a dedicated mentor, and additional training & development opportunities. There is also the potential for you to secure long term employment with the Council upon completion of your qualification, and the ability to also apply for internal vacancies restricted to employees throughout your apprenticeship.
