Further Information
A Green North Tyneside is one of five key themes of the Our North Tyneside Council Plan 2021-25. Sustainability is at the heart of everything the council does and its key policymaking.

The council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019 and has developed a Carbon Net-Zero 2030 Action Plan for the council’s operations and the Borough.

This builds on former iterations of key climate related plans and the success of reducing the council’s carbon footprint by 58% and the Borough’s carbon footprint by 45%.

North Tyneside has been recognised as a leader in taking action on climate change and achieved CDP Cities A List status in 2023 and its revised action plan for 2024 will encompass a greater focus on climate risk and adaptation, and emphasis on scope 3 emissions and offsetting/insetting.

The  council also has a long term strategic vision for the waste of the Borough including a 10 year plan for waste, which will be significantly updated in 2024 to focus on reuse and circular economy, reflecting emerging national policies including Extended Producer Responsibility, Deposit Return Scheme, Simpler Recycling and the application of the Emissions Trading Scheme to Energy from Waste.

This job role is key in delivering these key plans and being responsible for the continuing development of the future strategic direction.

The postholder is accountable for ensuring the council meets its statutory responsibilities and that it is prepared, responsive and through established governance arrangements is best-placed to meet the ambitions of the council and integrate its strategies around climate change mitigation, adaptation and circular economy including its approach to waste management.

In addition to leading strategy development, core elements of the role include:
• Overseeing the organisation and management of the council’s internal and external Carbon Net-Zero 2030 Boards
• Performance managing programmes of work and action plans, ensuring all necessary data is gathered, analysed and reported
• Responsibility for the council’s greenhouse gas reporting, including scope 3
• Implementing strategic decisions
• Budget management
• Overseeing contract management across the environmental sustainability team
• Working with procurement teams to secure waste and recycling services that deliver the aims of an updated waste and reuse strategy.

The post-holder leads a small team of specialist officers and will manage their workload, performance and outcomes. The post-holder directly supports the Head of Environmental Sustainability, Director of Environment and other Directors across the council and the Chief Executive who form the Senior Leadership Team.
