St Cuthbert's Catholic High School
Gretna Road
Newcastle upon Tyne

Required from 1st September 2025

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School as Deputy Head (Pastoral). For over one hundred years, St Cuthbert’s has been nurturing fine young men, preparing them to take their rightful place in the Church and in the world. We have provided our pupils and students with a challenging yet supportive environment within which to discover and develop their own God-given gifts.

The St Cuthbert’s experience is so much more than a comprehensive education. We strive to challenge our pupils to become young men of integrity, educated in faith and for justice. In keeping with the finest traditions of Catholic education, we strive to form young men of competence, conscience, compassion, and commitment.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Leadership Team of a dynamic, diverse, ambitious and kind school. St Cuthbert’s is an exceptionally rewarding place for our pupils and staff. The core purpose of the Deputy Head is to assist the Headmaster to set and implement the strategic direction of the school and to provide professional leadership and management to drive achievement of high standards in all areas of the school’s work, particularly in ensuring the provision of sustainable outstanding education through the preservation and development of its Catholic character. The school’s objectives relate to the provision of Catholic education and the school is part of the Catholic Church and, as such, is to be conducted as a Catholic school in accordance with Canon Law, the teachings of the Catholic Church and the trust deed of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. Therefore, the post of Deputy Head must be filled by a practising Catholic who can show, by example and from experience, that he or she will ensure that the school is distinctively Catholic in all aspects.

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will work closely with the Deputy Head (Academic) and Deputy Head (Catholic Life), reporting directly to the Headmaster. The postholder will work across a full range of operational and strategic matters and will be committed to the school’s Vision, Mission, and Values. The successful candidate should have a passion for pastoral care and positive wellbeing, a commitment to co-curricular activities and an understanding of the importance of Catholic leadership. This is a visible, high profile, and influential position, and the postholder will play an active role in the development of whole school strategy. This is an opportunity to join the Leadership Team in an impressive, all-boys Catholic School that has enjoyed a reputation as a centre of educational excellence for over one hundred and forty years.

We welcome applications from serving deputy heads and experienced senior leaders ready for the challenges of deputy headship.

There will be an opportunity for prospective applicants to visit the school. Interested candidates should contact the Headmaster’s PA, Mrs Lynn Anderson to arrange a visit.

Application forms and further information are available by following the link on our website to our online recruitment portal for submission by 9.00am on Monday 10th March 2025.

Interviews will be held on a date to be confirmed.
