Further Information
Tyne & Wear Archives, based at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle are seeking an enthusiastic and engaged archive professional for a full time, fixed term role as an Archives Officer. This role will deliver a wide range of professional archive duties including cataloguing and collections management, developing new processes, and working with records creating bodies.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of working in an archive environment, good team working, collections management and communication skills. This role is an ideal opportunity to develop as an archive professional in a varied, challenging and busy working environment.

We wish to appoint a professional archivist on a one year role to enable us to deliver a programme of cataloguing and catalogue enhancement work on new and previously transferred Public Records in particular the records of magistrates' courts, coroners, NHS trusts and Health Authorities. Their work will include integrating new collections information into existing catalogues and carrying out data cleansing in preparation for migration to a new CMS.  They will also develop written processes on transfer from Public Records bodies and access arrangements. This role will be involved in considering the impact of digital Public Records on our digital preservation needs going forward.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team at Tyne & Wear Archives. We are based at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle, one of the largest free museums in the north of England. Our collections are a typical mix of public authority and private material from across the 5 districts of the former Tyne & Wear. We have Place of Deposit status for Public Records, and also have a particular strength in industrial heritage with our shipbuilding collections designated as of national and international significance. We have recently retained our Accredited Archive status and are involved in a number of innovative projects whilst running a busy searchroom service. We are a small, friendly team who are part of the larger Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums service, which allows us exciting opportunities to work on shared projects with museum colleagues.

Tyne & Wear Archives are the local authority archive service caring for the records of Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and North and South Tyneside. The documents range from the 12th to 21st centuries and include building plans, school, hospital and church records as well as business records, especially those of important local industries such as shipbuilding and mining.

We offer a competitive salary and pension, a generous annual leave allowance and professional development opportunities. There is more information about what to expect from the recruitment process and working for us here: https://www.twmuseums.org.uk/about/jobs
